Abstract: Alkali-soluble parchymaran was extracted by using dilute alkali (0.5mol/l NaOH) solution as a solvent with the assistance of ultrasonic and the extraction condition was examined. 1.2-epoxypropane-mediated hydroxypropylation was applied to parchymaran, and the physicochemical properties of the resulting derivatives were investigated by using FT-IR and bile acid binding activity. The hydroxypropylated derivative showed higher bile acid binding activity than native glucan .
