Abstract: The common saying is essence of the labor people’s wisdom as well as one of the treasures of Chinese treasure house. It is lively, humorous, with deep meaning and of philosophical value. A large number of common sayings in the Huaben novels in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty (it is one of the novel forms which originated from the Song Dynasty and was written in a simplistic style with the materials of historical stories and social life of the folk people, and it was written in the form of saying and singing) provide precious language data for the research on Chinese Lexicology. This paper mainly analyses the common sayings in the novel Gu Zhang Jue Chen and is divided into four parts. Firstly, it analyses the meanings or significance of the common saying, its names in history and its definitions. Secondly, it gives brief introduction to the common sayings in the novel and describes the common sayings generally and in a categorized way. According to the form of structures of the sentences, the sentence patterns of the common sayings in the novel can be categorized into two groups, bi-sentences and uni-sentences. Thirdly, giving examples of the common sayings. This part analyses the six patterns of the common saying, surveys them synchronically and fatherly gives introductions to the situations of their usage. Fourthly, drawing a conclusion of this thesis.
