On The Character Xiao Hong in
Dream of the Red Mansion
Abstract: This essay mainly discusses on the character Xiao Hong in the Dream of the Red Mansion, and shows readers part of the scenery of the great picture of Daguan Garden. This essay includes the following three parts: Xiao Hong’s background and her first appearance; the relationship between Xiao Hong and Baoyu, Jia Yun, elder sister Feng; the significance of the character Xiao Hong. I hope that readers can know more about Xiao Hong by discussing these three aspects. How does Xiao Hong, a low class servant, even a closer contact with Baoyu would be blamed by other servants, successfully used her intelligence and beauty achieved her dream. Finally she was admired by elder sister Feng and loved by the master Jia Yun. Personally, I think Mr. Cao wanted to make Xiao Hong as one who involved in the complex interpersonal relationship in Daguan Garden, so to show us the living situation of the Daguan Garden. The female world in Daguan Gaden was not as innocent and quiet as we imagine. On the contrary, the Garden was filled with contradiction and struggles. Daguan Garden was the epitome of the feudalism society.
