An Analysis on Code-switching in Students’ Cell Phone Short Messages
Abstract: Code-switching is a kind of lingual variety which speakers use more than one language in one conversation. This phenomenon has attracted a great deal of research attention in the last two decades. This paper focuses on the code-switching phenomenon in college students’ cell phone short messages. It covers the causes of the prevalence of cell phone short messages on campus and the messages’ characteristics. It also includes the introduction of code-switching. The most important part of the paper is the code-switching used in the cell phone short messages by university students. This part discusses the causes, traits and functions of the code-switching. In the end, this paper summarizes the disadvantages and advantages of cell phone short message as well as code-switching and their developing trends. Some suggestions are also put forward in the paper.
