ABSTRACT
Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte’s only novel and has been regarded as a great work in literature since its publication .By describing Catherine’s dual character, this novel reveals Catherine’s unique view of love and marriage in Victoria period. By analyzing the dual character of Catherine, combining the special background of Victoria age and the trait of Gothic female, this paper analyzes the manifestation of Catherine’s dual character and its causes from the perspectives of internal and external factors which include family and marriage factors, social and environmental factors. And this paper takes Catherine as a representative female in that period and analyzes her consciousness of self-liberation and her deep insight to love and marriage to reveal the unique significance of the novel in that epoch .
