An Analysis of Cantonese-English Code-switching
in Cantonese TV Series
Abstract: Based on the findings of the former linguistic theories and the latest materials collected from The Family Link and Wars of In-Laws by the author, this paper aims to give a brief introduction to code-switching (or CS), especially Cantonese-English CS, and attempts to analyze the functions of Cantonese-English CS in Cantonese-speaking regions according to the discourse from Cantonese TV series. It also predicts the future development of the Cantonese-English CS in the speech community. The present essay pays attention to the following research questions: (1) actual functions of Cantonese-English CS in application; (2) some problems existing in the application of Cantonese-English CS; (3) future development of Cantonese-English CS. During the discussion, a lot of examples are given to support what the author finds.
