Through the exploration of different theoretical principles involved with the translation of international trade contracts at different period of times and the sample analysis of translation praxis under the guidance of such theories, it is frequently observed that the classification of these principles are not only mutually overlapping but also fuzzy and obscure. Moreover, the translation practice under these principles pays so insufficient attention to the discrepancy between different cultures that a workable system to comprehensively guide the international trade contract translation has not yet developed. Therefore, this paper expounds the cultural connotation of international trade contract at the lexical , syntactic and textual levels and ventures to put forward the translation strategies based on the four aspects of Chinese and Western cultural differences, where mean moral, values, religious belief and mode of thinking. International trade contract translation mainly involves the translating of trade transaction contract for different cultural business organizations.It comes within the track of business English translation but has its own characteristics.For instance, because of focusing on different morals between Chinese and Western, Chinese people in contracts, ritualize such words and phrases as “by the two sides through friendly consultations(经双方友好协商)”, “based on mutual benefit, equality and cooperation principle(本着互惠互利,平等合作的原则)”, for the purpose of showing the justice or respects to the counter party. However, because the western value heavy benefit, the English contract puts more emphasis on its amount or merchandise, and accordingly westerners always arrange the amount or the merchandise at the important position in contract, in order to emphasize their interests. Furthermore, the Christianity has a great influence on western society, which justifies the employment of phrases like “acts of God” for the clause of Force Majeure. Different thinking modes has apparent effect on different ways of Chinese and western in description of time, on whether the fixed collocation of synonyms are adopted, and on whether long complex sentences structure are employed in contract. Based on the analysis mentioned above,the author proposes three strategies in international trade contract translation under the influence of different cultures. First, this thesis analyzes the translating strategies for words and phrases from five aspects: the translation of English singular and plural form, the translation of synonyms’ collocation in English contracts, the differences in expressions of date, the translation of religionary phrase and the translation concerning expression of amount involved in contract. Next, this thesis discusses the translating strategies on syntax of employment of long complex sentences in contracts, which include sequent translation, inverse translation, expansion or merge. Finally, this thesis analyzes the strategies for text translation. According to Chinese principle emphasizing righteousness relative to benefit and following expressive habits of the language of Chinese in contract, this thesis proposes that when translating an English contract into Chinese, we should add sentences like “by the two sides through friendly consultations(经双方友好协商)” or “based on mutual benefit principle(本着互惠互利的原则)” in order to compensate the cultural default of translation. In brief, the principles of international trade contract translation should not only comply with the traditional principles of translation “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Smoothness”, but also take sufficient account to the different cultural connotation of Chinese and English contracts. It is beneficial for translators,scholars and university students who are devoted to improving translation quality by integrating traditional translation principles and cultural strategies in translating international trade contracts.A qualified contract translator should meet the essential requirements: 1) A good command of both Chinese and English under their different cultures;2) A comprehensive grasp of the underlying culture difference;3)Being familiar with the idiomatical,formal and professional expressions.
