America is a powerful western country. Its culture, politics, economy, etc., exert great influence on the countries in the world, occidental and oriental. The history of America began with the Protestant immigrants, and Protestantism influenced America’s political system, ideology, economy, etc. to a great extent. On the other hand, Confucianism plays a great role in the history, culture, and thinking mode of the Asian countries, especially China. As the country with more than 2,000 years are under the influence of Confucianism, Confucianism wreaks a dominant influence in the development process of Chinese politics, culture, history, ideology, and all the other facets of China.
This essay, which consists of five parts, is to humbly study the several similarities and compatibilities between American Protestantism and Confucianism mainly from the perspective of the Protestant self-improvement and Confucian Ren, etc. The first part is to concisely inform the thesis and main structure of this essay. The second and third parts are to introduce and analyze the Protestantism in America and Confucianism in China respectively. The fourth part is to analyze the similarity and compatibility between Self-Improvement of American Protestantism and Ren of Confucianism. The last part is to draw a conclusion of the whole essay.
