Abstract: Symbols make D. H. Lawrence’s novels, and there is no exception in Sons and Lovers. Lawrence uses so many symbols in his novels to express his thoughts. In Sons and Lovers, “Flowers” are main symbols in this novel. Different flowers stand for different meanings, which imply different personalities of the three heroes and suggest the development of affairs. To explore the flowers in the novel means the exploration of the heroes and understanding this novel. This paper analyzes the main flowers appearing around the dramatis personae. Through analyzing these symbolisms of flowers we can find the theme of this novel, the complicated relationships between the dramatis personas as well as the characters of dramatis personas.
