ABSTRACT
This paper first clears the definition of means of satire and the importance of satire in novel creation. It points out that satire is an indispensable element in writing novels and different novelists use different means of satire according to individual writing style. Then this paper emphasizes on analyzing the differences and similarities between Pride and Prejudice and Fortress Besieged. First, this paper analyzes their similarities; they are innuendo in psychological description, ridicule in characters’ activities and satirical dialogues. Second, this paper states the two differences: irony in Pride and Prejudice and sarcasm in Fortress Besieged. Finally, through the study on each novel’s differences and similarities, it summarizes their individual features and implied meanings to make readers have a deeper understanding of their works.
