ABSTRACT
This paper first makes a brief introduction of the definition, characteristics and word-formation of abbreviations, pointing out that they are usually time-saving, effort-saving, and material-saving and in line with "economic principles" in language. And then it explores the application of abbreviations in business English, mainly in two areas—spoken business English and correspondences of business English. Moreover, a large number of instances are selected to provide the general principles and methods of the abbreviation translations. The paper conclusively proposes the development trend of abbreviations, stressing that abbreviations are an important component of business English and deserve every language learner’s attention.
