What is responsible for this phenomenon? Are there some individual differences that may affect their language learning? How do learners’ individual differences facilitate or inhibit their learning of English? Generally, the factors exerting strong influence on students’ English acquisition can be classified in two sets: non-learner factors and learner factors.
The non-learner factors consist of two parts: environmental (i.e.,factors relate to society and the educational system) and institutional factors (i.e.,factors related to schools). [10]
The learner factors can also be divided into two types. The first type is immodifiable factors-features that learners already have before they enter into learning program, such as gender, intelligence, cognitive style, and Previous learning experience. The second type is modifiable factors: factors learners can modify if they want to, for example, motivation, attitude, beliefs, learning strategies.
Ⅴ. How to Settle This Issue
We know that there are some problems in our education; we should take measure to solve them. In my opinion, we should take four aspects into consideration, including society and the educational system, home education, teacher’s teaching style and the students.
5.1. Society and the Educational System
Our education can be dated to the ancient times, when the education was limited and was restricted by the lord. Maybe, the education was not perfect. In modern times, China has a large population so that every class has many students. Teachers have no time to manage so many students and pay attention to the temperament of each student. So as far as I am concerned, we should reform our education system. It is will be better to decrease the quality of one class. In this way, we can guarantee each student to get more opportunity to improve themselves according to their temperament and can represent themselves better and strengthen their confidence.
Unfortunately,it seems to be so difficult for teachers to get familiar with their students for there are usually more than 50 students in one teaching class in many middle schools in China. And it is very likely that one teacher teaches six or more classes in one semester. So it is especially necessary to reduce the class size. Only in this way can students have more opportunities to express themselves in English and to get more interaction with both their classmates and teachers. Teachers will also benefit a lot from small classes, for they can be more familiar with their students and teach according to the uniqueness of every student
5.2. Home Education and Students Themselves
The students undertake heavy burden, parents expect them to be a good man. Home is the first environment in the process of children’s growth. So in what way the parents guide them is significant. I think parents should develop a habit of being independent, optimistic and so on. Self-confidence is the most significant in language learning. it provides learners with the motivation and energy to become positive about their own learning. It also creates the drive in them to acquire the target language, enjoy the learning process, and experience real communication. Successful language learners appear to have higher self-esteem than those who are unsuccessful. Lack of belief in one’s ability hinders him from achieving that task—pursuing a target language accomplish. Moreover, it is widely believed that once students gain self-confidence, it progressively expands, in conjunction with experiencing success and satisfaction as well as good relationships.
5.3. Teachers’ Role
Class sponsor play an important role in the class. Teachers should treat their students equally, they can not have a prejudice against their students and their temperament for their own likes and dislikes. An example was told in the work of B·A·Cyxomjnhcknn,(1918-1970):a boy who named Misha who was a grade one student. It was the first day of school, he was criticized by teachers for his negligence of hygiene.it was happened that Misha was a sensitive and timid boy, so he was very afraid of this teacher and do bad in this subject(math). After the semester was over, the boy’s father visit the headmaster, Cyxomjnhcknn, and told him the state of Misha .in the new semester, the headmaster decided to make him to another class and exhort that class sponsor to treat Misha well. [11] From then on, the boys have forged ahead with his work. Finally he became a Doctor in Mathematics
Teaching method is the blend of different kinds of teaching activities which operated by teachers. Its purpose is to accomplish the teaching tasks. It consists of teaching method adopted by teachers and students’ learning method guided by teachers. Many scholars stress that we should take different measure in the light of students’ age , gender, experience, temperature, character, thinking style. etc. [12] Only can we choose the proper teaching method, we can improve students’ competence and ideological level and promote them to develop healthily.
VI. Different Method for Different Kinds of Students
6.1 Choleric Temperament
The students of choleric temperament are outgoing and are good at social. So they can do well in listing part. In the process of teaching, we should take advantage of their quality and make full use of listening, and review the words and phrases which we have learnt quickly. And we can make them have knowledge of the politics, history, culture, and customs and so on. In this way, we can broaden their background and help them acquire western culture. We often can acquire new knowledge after we use it more than three times. In my opinion, this method can help the choleric temperaments students avoid their habit of impatience and hating remembering new words. In the other hand, we can encourage them to communicate with each other, with the advantage of boldness. Oral expression always use the words, phrase, expression which we in our daily life. Language context, interesting game, activity can be organized to rise their motivation, they can get a sense of accomplishment. These activities cater for lust to communicate. [13]
